Building MaterialsBuilding materials include
1. Stone - Stone has good insulation properties because of its thermal mass. Stone can be dense and be good for use in construction in areas of cold climate. Different types of stone are more suitable than others and a qualified stonemason can help you choose stone that can be sourced and used in your home. Of course stone can also be used in tiling and in kitchen renovations for bench tops and bathroom surrounds.
2. Timber - Timber depending on the type can have good insulation properties. Timber is used in frame work , for doors and window, roofing and flooring.
3. Concrete - Concrete has good insulation properties even though it often feels cold to touch. In the home concrete is used in wall, floors and sometimes roofs.
4. Glass - Glass is used in window and is not a good insulator. Glass easily allows heat and clod to pass thru. To help with this in colder climates double and triple glazing is used. This is where instead of 1 plan of glass being in a window you get 2-3 panes of glass. Further more curtains and timber shutters are used to stop the cold passing into the home.
5. Plastics - Plastics have good insulation properties and is used in insulation in roofs, around metal pipes, in curtains, in drainage pipe work, around lights, in floor coverings such as carpets and underlays etc
6. Metal - including copper and steal for water pipes, aluminium and steal for roofing and guttering, nails , support beams etc . Plumbers use lagging to insulate metal pipes since they loose alot of heat into the environment. This lagging is made from hemp which is a natural fibre or chem lagg which is a plastic and has good insulation properties.
